Women at Barcelona/Mujeres Adelante was designed to build and expand on the Women at Durban model – bringing the voices of those most affected by HIV and AIDS into the spheres for the exchange of critical information, establishment of valuable networks, and the formation of policy and research agendas.
Many of the primary organisers from Women at Durban came together to work toward the XIV International AIDS Conference in Barcelona, Spain. The group, led by the IAWC and ICW developed a two angled approach for the conference. Women at Barcelona was set up as an organising umbrella within the conference while Mujeres Adelante was set up as an independent, parallel forum for local community members similar to the Women at Durban satellite conference. Both initiatives were undertaken in partnership with Creación Positiva, a local HIV-positive women’s support organisation in Barcelona.
